St. Louis County moved into a higher level of coordination Friday after activating its Emergency Operations Center to deal with eight active wildfires burning across the county and nearby parts of the Northland. One fire in Cotton had already been knocked down, but officials were treating the day as a countywide public safety event, not a single isolated blaze.

County Emergency Management, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, St. Louis County Public Health and the National Weather Service in Duluth were working together to share information and coordinate the response. That kind of central command changes what residents can expect: it helps keep messages aligned, speeds up updates if evacuations or road restrictions become necessary and gives officials a better way to track where fire danger is moving as conditions shift across the county.

The sheriff’s office said no outdoor burning should be happening because the weather was hot, dry and windy, creating the kind of conditions that can turn a small ignition into a fast-moving fire. Early indications suggested several of the fires started when residents burned cardboard, while others began after trees knocked down power lines. The National Weather Service in Duluth reported wind gusts of 30 to 40 miles per hour, with winds expected to ease by around 9 p.m. and humidity to improve later Friday.

Later in the day, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said all eight fires had been controlled and mop-up operations were continuing. Even so, the fire risk was expected to remain elevated through the following day, and county officials said St. Louis County had recorded 17 wildfires on Friday overall. In a county with large rural stretches and homes near forested land, the emergency center activation was the signal that residents needed to stay alert for changing fire behavior, road access issues and trusted county updates as the response continued.
