Wet pavement played a role in a two-vehicle crash at Highway 53 and Arkola Road in Cotton Township that sent one driver to the hospital with minor injuries and put a familiar Northland intersection back in the spotlight.

The Minnesota State Patrol listed the crash at 3:05 p.m. Friday, April 17, 2026. Troopers said a Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling east on Arkola Road and attempted to enter Highway 53 southbound when it collided with a Buick LaCrosse already traveling south on Highway 53 in the right lane. The Buick driver was taken to an area hospital. Crews cleared the scene relatively quickly.

The crash happened close to Wilbert Cafe and El Toro Lounge, helping place it in a heavily traveled stretch of Cotton Township where Highway 53 traffic, local access and turning movements converge. Outside agencies responding included the St. Louis County Sheriff, St. Louis Rescue Squad, Cotton Fire & Rescue and Meadowlands Fire & Rescue.

The location matters because St. Louis County Public Works says the Highway 53 and Arkola Road, also known as Comstock Lake Road, junction in Cotton was the first J-turn on the county highway system. County officials have said J-turns remove right-angle conflict points, and national studies have shown more than a 90% reduction in injury and fatal crashes after installation. Friday’s collision landed in exactly the kind of intersection corridor county planners have tried to make safer.

Even with only minor injuries, the crash is part of a broader Highway 53 safety picture. Minnesota State Patrol troopers responded to 5,372 personal-injury crashes statewide in 2025, along with 165 fatal crashes. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety also reported 71 traffic deaths in Minnesota through April 14, 2026, compared with 78 at the same point in 2025.

Cotton has already seen another serious wreck on the same highway this year. On Feb. 16, 2026, a rollover south of Cotton on Highway 53 sent one person to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and drew the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, St. Louis County Rescue, Meadowlands First Responders and the Cotton Fire Department.

For drivers, the message on this stretch is clear: Highway 53 near Arkola Road is a place to slow down, watch the wet pavement and pay close attention to southbound traffic already in the lane. In a corridor that carries commuting, shopping and through-traffic across St. Louis County, a split-second misjudgment can turn an ordinary afternoon into an emergency response.
