Ten years after opening near Denfeld High School to address what neighbors once called a food desert, Whole Foods Co-op's Grand Avenue location threw open its doors Sunday afternoon for a free community celebration marking the milestone.

The two-hour event, held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 4426 Grand Ave., drew shoppers and neighbors for treats, prize giveaways, and guided store tours. The St. Louis County Historical Society added a distinctly local touch, hosting Denfeld neighborhood trivia that tested guests on the history of the surrounding West Duluth community.

The co-op framed the occasion explicitly as a thank-you. "This event is a thank-you to our neighbors and shoppers for a decade of supporting community-owned food in West Duluth," organizers wrote in the event description, adding that both longtime Co-op Owners and newcomers to the neighborhood were welcome.

The Denfeld store, which opened in 2016, is the younger of the co-op's two Duluth locations. The original Hillside store at 610 E. Fourth St. opened in 2005 and the following year became the first LEED-certified co-op in the country, a designation recognizing leadership in energy and environmental design. That sustainability focus carried to Grand Avenue: the Denfeld site runs on an array of about 140 solar panels, assembled locally in Mountain Iron.

General Manager Sarah Hannigan, who has led the co-op since 2016 and managed the Hillside store before that, has described the organization's growth philosophy in terms that go well beyond square footage. "It's not just for the sake of getting bigger; that growth allows us to make a bigger impact on our community," Hannigan said. "There's something deeper that these co-ops offer; it's not just about food. In a time of abundant consumer choices, it's empowering to know that Whole Foods Co-op is more than just a grocery store — it supports regional farmers, producers, businesses and nonprofits."

The Denfeld anniversary lands in a year that carries additional weight for the cooperative movement. The United Nations General Assembly designated 2025 as the International Year of Cooperatives, and the broader Whole Foods Co-op organization is marking its 55th year in Duluth.

Community programs tied to the store include the GIVE! Round Up at checkout, the Grow Local Food Fund, and a Community Support Program that channels resources to local nonprofits and organizations. The store also offers curbside pickup, delivery, and a deli and catering operation.
