Boater dies after capsizing near Captree State Park in West Islip

A 58-year-old Bohemia man died after his boat capsized while he was trying to launch it off Captree State Park in West Islip, a fatal accident that drew a multi-agency response to one of Suffolk County’s busiest waterfronts.

New York State Police said troopers, New York State Parks Police, Suffolk County Marine Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to Captree State Park Piers in the Town of Islip at about 8:37 p.m. on Aug. 7 after reports of a boating incident. Investigators determined the man was the vessel’s sole occupant, and his body was recovered from underneath the boat.

Captree State Park sits on the south shore of Long Island at the eastern tip of Jones Island, in the towns of Babylon and Islip. The park has long been a major fishing and boating destination, with Captree State Park Marina and the surrounding piers serving both private boaters and charter traffic, which makes a fatal launch accident there resonate well beyond the park itself.

The case also points to the hazards that show up before a boat ever gets far from shore. Coast Guard boating safety guidance warns that capsizing can happen when boaters move too fast in rough water, load a vessel carelessly, allow gear or passengers to shift, or fail to adjust when conditions change. At Captree, where launches happen alongside heavy summer traffic and open-water access on the South Shore, those risks can turn a routine outing into an emergency in seconds.

For Suffolk County boaters, the safest approach this season is to treat the launch as part of the trip, not a quick prelude to it. Load the boat evenly, keep gear secured so it cannot slide, stay alert to changing wind or chop, and slow down early if the water turns rough. The tragedy off Captree is a reminder that on Long Island’s busiest recreational water, one unstable moment can be enough to overturn a vessel and overwhelm everyone aboard.
