Joseph Porter, 36, Arrested for Burglarizing Seven Third Precinct Businesses
Shirley resident Joseph Porter, 36, was arrested after detectives tied him to seven commercial burglaries across the Third Precinct; the arrests underscore risks to local small businesses.

Suffolk County Police arrested 36-year-old Joseph Porter of Shirley on Feb. 3 after investigators say they linked him to a string of seven commercial burglaries across the Third Precinct, including Bay Shore, Central Islip and Brentwood. Third Squad detectives and Third Precinct Investigative Unit officers led the probe, and Third Precinct Community Support officers located Porter and placed him under arrest.
“Third Precinct Community Support officers located Porter at 1:56 p.m. Tuesday at a residence on Palm Place in Bay Shore and placed him under arrest,” police reports state. Patch reporting and other sources say Porter resides on Manor Drive in Shirley and was taken into custody at approximately 1:56 p.m. at the Palm Place address. He was being held overnight and was scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Feb. 4; some outlets reported variations on the day of the week for that arraignment.
Investigators allege the suspect used heavy objects to smash glass doors or windows to gain entry during overnight or early morning hours. “Porter allegedly broke into two Bay Shore businesses, Winnie’s Coffee Shop on East Main Street and NAPA Auto Parts-Budshore Auto Parts on Union Boulevard, between 3:20 and 3:40 a.m. on January 14,” one police summary states. Patch provides the addresses for those businesses as Winnie’s Coffee Shop, 166 East Main St., and NAPA Auto Parts–Budshore Auto Parts, 1912 Union Blvd. Other named targets in Bay Shore include Pine Aire Fish & Chips and Exit 42 Deli. Central Islip locations cited include J&S Wine Cellar & Liquor and an alleged petit larceny incident at a Home Depot on Jan. 14, while Brentwood businesses named are Pita & Pizza and Super Taco.
Charges reported across outlets vary in wording: several sources list seven counts of third-degree burglary, while others describe the counts as felony burglary. Reporters note that the precise statutory citations and charge language should be confirmed with Suffolk County Police or the county prosecutor’s office. Police have also identified a misdemeanor petit larceny count tied to alleged merchandise theft at the Central Islip Home Depot on Jan. 14. For local business owners, a concentrated string of overnight break-ins has immediate and longer-term consequences. Beyond direct losses and property repair, repeated incidents can increase insurance premiums, prompt investments in upgraded security and shift operating hours or staffing. From a public-policy perspective, the case highlights demand for targeted patrols, timely information-sharing between law enforcement and small-business networks, and support for cost-effective security measures such as visible lighting and video surveillance.
Authorities say Porter will face the court process; “A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.” In the coming days, readers can expect confirmation of formal charge language and arraignment details from Suffolk County Police or court records, and local businesses affected may release damage and loss estimates as investigations and potential evidence processing continue.
