Northport Volunteer Karen Breen Named Suffolk County Woman of Distinction
Northport's Karen Breen, the first woman to serve as Con Edison's Chief Construction Inspector in Queens, was named Suffolk County's Woman of Distinction for 2026.

Karen Holland Breen, a Northport resident whose volunteer work spans hospital auxiliary leadership, veterans advocacy, and parish ministry, was honored March 10 as the Suffolk County Woman of Distinction for the 18th Legislative District at the Evans K. Griffing Building in Riverhead.
Legislator Stephanie Bontempi, who represents the 18th Legislative District, presented the award during the Suffolk County Woman of Distinction Celebration Luncheon. "Karen Breen represents the very best of Suffolk County, a tireless advocate, a compassionate neighbor, and a true leader," Bontempi said. "Her decades of service have touched countless lives, and it is an honor to recognize her as our Woman of Distinction for 2026."
Breen has called Northport home since 1987. A graduate of Rosemont College, she built her professional career at Con Edison, where she became the first woman to serve as Chief Construction Inspector in Queens before later overseeing electric operations complaints and procurement for major infrastructure projects.
Her community footprint is equally substantial. For more than three decades she has led the St. Charles Hospital Auxiliary Northport Chapter, focusing on pediatric care, and has received the Spirit of St. Charles Award as well as recognition as a Woman of Distinction in 2025. At St. Philip Neri Church she serves as both a choir member and Extraordinary Minister.
Veterans causes have also drawn her sustained attention. Breen works with Team RWB, General Needs, Ltd., and the USA Patriots Amputee Softball Team, coordinating events, fundraising, and outreach to help veterans transition to civilian life. As a longtime member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, she has backed scholarships, parish programs, and catechetical training, earning the St. Pius X Award for that service.
Her involvement reaches further still into the fabric of the Northport-East Northport community through the Asharoken Garden Club, the Girl Scouts, and various PTA and booster organizations. Breen attended the luncheon with her husband, Dan Breen.
