Red Cross aids three Oakdale households after Montauk Highway fire
Three Oakdale households were displaced by a Montauk Highway fire, and the Red Cross quickly delivered aid to cover the first critical hours.

A fire on Montauk Highway in Oakdale left three households needing immediate help, and the Long Island Red Cross responded with financial aid, comfort kits and blankets to help families get through the first 24 to 48 hours.
The assistance arrived quickly after the blaze, giving displaced residents basic support while they dealt with the disruption of losing access to their homes. For families suddenly pushed out by a house fire, that mix of cash help and practical supplies can determine how they manage the first night, where they sleep and what they can replace right away.
The American Red Cross Greater New York Region’s Long Island chapter, based in Mineola, serves Nassau and Suffolk counties, including Shelter Island. It says it responds to emergencies and disasters across the region, including home fires, by providing shelter, food, clothing and emotional support at no cost to affected people.

That local mission fits into a countywide emergency network that is built to handle incidents like the Oakdale fire. Suffolk County’s Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services says it serves about 1.5 million residents and supports more than 10,000 emergency responders across the county, an infrastructure that is often the first line of defense when a house fire turns into a family displacement emergency.
The Red Cross also points to prevention as part of recovery. Its Long Island Home Fire Campaign installs free smoke alarms and provides home fire safety education, a reminder that even a relatively small fire can trigger both an immediate relief response and a longer recovery period for the people caught in it.
