Sunrise Highway to close overnight for four weeks in Brookhaven

Westbound Sunrise Highway at Exit 55 and northbound Station Road at Sunrise Highway will close overnight in Brookhaven beginning Monday night, forcing drivers onto detours from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for about four weeks, weather permitting. The shutdown is tied to maintenance on the Station Road bridge over Sunrise Highway, and it will hit the stretch of road many Suffolk motorists use to move between central Brookhaven, the East End and nearby hamlets late at night and before dawn.

Under the state Department of Transportation plan, westbound Sunrise Highway traffic will be sent onto the North Service Road and then back onto Sunrise Highway. Drivers on northbound Station Road will be routed to eastbound Sunrise Highway, then to Exit 57N for westbound Horseblock Road, and back to Exit 55 to reach Station Road northbound. The work is scheduled to begin Monday, June 1, 2026, and drivers who travel overnight, including shift workers, delivery vehicles and anyone needing a clear route for time-sensitive travel, will need to build in extra minutes while crews are on site.

The closure arrives as another reminder of how often Sunrise Highway requires overnight maintenance in Brookhaven Town. In June 2025, the state announced a separate overnight project on Sunrise Highway between Exit 53 and Exit 55 for concrete pavement repairs, planned for about six weeks, also weather permitting. That earlier job showed the same playbook now being used at Station Road: overnight hours, lane or ramp shutdowns, and detours aimed at keeping daytime traffic flowing on one of Suffolk County’s busiest east-west corridors.

The state has also been steadily investing in Long Island bridge work in recent years. In January 2024, Governor Kathy Hochul said a $48.2 million package of bridge projects had been completed, including a new Hospital Road bridge over Sunrise Highway in Brookhaven. The Station Road project fits that broader pattern of bridge rehabilitation across Suffolk County, where even a short overnight closure can ripple through commutes, local commerce and emergency travel if drivers are not prepared.
