Charlestown warns of Main Street paving, Old Springfield Road closure

Drivers, downtown shoppers, delivery crews and nearby residents will feel the first hit on Tuesday, June 9, when Charlestown begins paving Main Street, the town’s primary corridor. The work is expected to make parking severely limited, a disruption that could slow access to storefronts, shift short errands into longer trips and force anyone headed into the center of town to build in extra time.

The second disruption follows on Wednesday, June 17, when Old Springfield Road will close between Willard Street and 163 Old Springfield Road. That shutdown will cut off through traffic on a stretch many people may use to move across town, and it will send regular commuters, service vehicles and other drivers looking for other ways around the closure.

Charlestown’s warning comes on top of a busy start to June in the town’s latest-news feed, which also showed a June 3 Selectboard meeting notice and a June 2 checklist session notice. The roadwork, though, is the item most likely to affect everyday routines. Main Street carries local traffic through the town center, so any paving there can touch parking, business access and the short trips people make for errands, pickups and appointments.

For businesses and service providers, the timing gives an early chance to alert customers and employees before the equipment arrives. For residents, the practical message is simpler: plan alternate routes, expect the town center to be more constrained than usual and allow more time for commuting, deliveries, school travel and other trips that depend on those roads. With nearly a week before the Main Street work and almost two weeks before the Old Springfield Road closure, Charlestown is giving the community enough notice to adjust before the delays begin.
