Claremont Parks and Recreation Commission cancels May 11 meeting
Spring park decisions in Claremont will wait after the May 11 commission meeting was canceled, leaving families, coaches and field users without a public forum this month.

Claremont families, coaches and park users will have to wait for another public meeting if they want answers on fields, repairs or recreation programming. The city canceled the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting planned for May 11, and no replacement date has been announced.
The notice, posted May 8, matters because the commission is the advisory body that brings park issues before the Claremont City Council. Its job is to make recommendations on the acquisition, development, improvement, equipment and maintenance of city parks, playgrounds and facilities, the very issues that shape spring and summer use of Claremont’s recreation system.

The commission normally meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Claremont Savings Bank Community Center. With the May session off the calendar, residents who were planning to raise concerns about amenities, maintenance requests or programming will have to wait for a reschedule or the next regular meeting cycle. That can slow the pace of decisions tied to field scheduling, park upkeep and budget-related recommendations that often move from the commission to the council.
The delay comes at a time when local recreation decisions tend to carry the most weight. Warm-weather use of parks, playgrounds and athletic facilities rises quickly in Sullivan County, and a missed meeting can leave questions about repairs, equipment needs and seasonal programming unresolved for weeks.
The commission page lists a full slate of members and alternates, including Robert Walker, Eric Zengota, Allyn Girard, Sheila Rook, Ken Burke, Jeffrey Chase, Heather Irish, Molly Tremblay, Michael Theroux, Gary Dickerman and Tina Bergeron, along with several vacant alternate seats. Those openings can make cancellations more disruptive, since the panel is already a small advisory group.
This is not the first schedule change for the body this year. A Parks and Recreation Commission meeting set for January 12 was postponed and rescheduled for January 19 at 6 p.m. at the same community center.
Claremont’s boards and commissions page says residents who want to serve may apply for a seat on the board, committee or commission of their choice. For now, anyone with parks-related business on the agenda will have to wait until the city puts the commission back on the calendar.
