Newport closes Canal Street to through traffic for crane work

Newport will close Canal Street to through traffic from Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10, for crane work in the area, and drivers will need alternate routes and extra travel time. The shutdown affects one of Newport’s main downtown connectors, a street many residents and commuters use to move between NH 11/103, Maple Street and the center of town.

Traffic that normally cuts through Canal Street will shift onto other city streets, which can slow cross-town travel during the work week. Drivers heading downtown should expect more complicated parking, and businesses along the corridor may see a different flow of customers and suppliers as access changes around the closure.

Newport has already put Canal Street through several rounds of construction-related restrictions this month. The town posted notices for June 2-5 and June 8-9, when one lane was open at the end of each work day, and then for June 16 and 17, when Canal Street was closed for sidewalk construction. The new five-day closure extends that sequence.

The town’s 2025 Cross Street Traffic Study identifies Canal Street and Cross Street as important cut-through roads from NH 11/103 to Maple Street, with the intersection functioning like a pitchfork and Canal Street carrying traffic between those routes. Canal Street runs in a U shape between NH 11/103, with the eastern segment one-way out to NH 11/103 on the Sunapee side, a layout that limits how easily traffic can be rerouted when the street is closed.

Newport’s Highway Department is responsible for maintenance, rehabilitation and drainage on about 65 miles of town roads. As Sullivan County’s county seat, Newport has about 6,500 residents and sits between Interstates 89 and 91.
