Newport put its 2025 annual town report online on the same day residents went to the polls at the LaValley Family Community Center, giving the county-seat town a fresh public record at a moment when spending decisions still matter. For a community of about 6,500 people, the report is more than a formality. It is the place where budget figures, department summaries, town statistics and year-end records come together in one document that residents can search, compare and use before the next round of town decisions.

The timing carries extra weight because Newport was still living with the consequences of a failed 2024-2025 budget. A May 20, 2024 town manager report said the budget lost 264 to 359, forcing cuts of $290,051 from the general fund, $280,272 from the water fund and $181,506 from the sewer fund. Those numbers turn the annual report into a practical checkpoint for residents who want to see how the town adjusted after the vote, where money moved and which pressures carried into the next fiscal year.

Newport, incorporated in 1761, is governed by Town Meeting, an elected five-member Selectboard and an appointed Town Manager. That structure makes the annual report especially important in a town where local government decisions ripple through public works, water and sewer operations, and other everyday services. The town’s finance pages already list annual financial reports stretching back through 2023, 2022, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015, showing a longer paper trail residents can use to track spending and operations over time.

The town has also made the process more accessible in recent years. Newport posted the digital version of its 2024 Town Report on May 9, 2025, and its 2023 annual report credited the combined work of the Newport Board of Selectmen, the Town Manager, department heads, town employees and volunteer committees. With the 2025 report now online, residents no longer need to wait for a paper copy at town hall to see how Newport stood at the end of the year. Instead, the report arrives as a searchable record of where the town is now, and how the next round of decisions will be judged.
