Sunapee boat launch road closes for stump grinding Saturday
Boat Launch Road will close from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday for stump grinding, and Lot D and Lot C will be shut down too.

Boaters, waterfront visitors and anyone planning to use Sunapee Harbor on Saturday, May 16, need to avoid the Boat Launch Road area from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. while the town grinds tree stumps there. Boat Launch Road will be temporarily closed for the work, and Lot D, the Gazebo and Boat Staging Area, along with Lot C, the Gazebo lot, will also be closed for the duration.
The Town of Sunapee Buildings and Grounds Department posted the notice on May 7, giving residents a week to adjust launch plans, pickups and spring recreation trips before the closure begins. The practical answer for May 16 is simple: do not plan to enter the Boat Launch Road area during the work window, and schedule any launch or waterfront visit for before 8 a.m. or after 2 p.m.

The disruption is brief, but it affects a busy public access point at the height of early-season lake traffic. Sunapee Harbor Boat Launch information lists offsite parking, 24-hour access, no fee, a restroom and handicap restroom access, all of which helps explain why even a short shutdown can ripple through the harbor area for fishermen, seasonal homeowners, contractors and visitors heading to Lake Sunapee.
The town’s Boat Launch and Town Dock Ordinance says town boat launches are real property abutting Lake Sunapee and owned and maintained by the Town of Sunapee. That makes the Boat Launch Road work more than routine roadside maintenance. It is part of managing a municipal asset that has to stay safe, functional and open to the public.
Sunapee’s Buildings & Grounds Department says its mission is to preserve the beauty, safety and sustainability of community facilities and outdoor spaces. Stump grinding fits that mandate, especially in an area where equipment, pedestrians and vehicles share a small amount of space. Clearing the stumps now should reduce hazards and help keep the harbor access area in better shape for the season ahead.
The May 16 closure also comes during a busy stretch for town maintenance notices. Sunapee posted a separate parking lot and crosswalk striping notice for May 7, and its news feed on May 6 included a Georges Mills Boat Launch closure and an update on a fuel spill there. For Sunapee residents, the pattern is clear: spring maintenance is moving across the town’s waterfront and parking areas, and the next one reaches Boat Launch Road on Saturday.
