Sunapee to stripe parking lots, crosswalks Thursday, limit parking downtown
Lot F, Lot G, Lot B, Lot I and Lot J, plus Lot A at the boat launch, will be striped Thursday at 8 a.m. as Sunapee limits parking and crosswalk access downtown.

Parking will be limited Thursday morning in Lot F, Lot G, Lot B, Lot I and Lot J on Main Street, along with Lot A at the boat launch, as the Sunapee Highway Department begins line striping at 8 a.m. Crosswalk striping will take place in the same areas, so drivers and pedestrians should expect coned-off sections, temporary restrictions and active equipment near the places that usually carry the most short-term parking and foot traffic.
The work is being described as routine maintenance to refresh pavement markings, but in Sunapee Harbor and along Main Street, faded lines are more than a cosmetic issue. With heavier spring and summer traffic building, clear striping helps define where to park, where to cross and where to slow down in a village setting that mixes boat access, downtown circulation and pedestrian movement in tight quarters. Residents and visitors are being asked to avoid restricted spaces, watch for signage and use caution near crews throughout the morning.

The locations matter because Sunapee’s parking and traffic patterns are closely managed around the harbor. River Road in Sunapee Harbor is one-way between Maple Street and High Street, with traffic flowing away from the boat launch and central harbor area. Town ordinances also prohibit boat trailers not attached to a motor vehicle in town parking areas, a restriction that underscores how closely the town ties parking rules to boat-launch access and public safety.
The striping work also fits into the town’s broader harbor policy. Sunapee updated its boat launch and town dock ordinance in 2025 to emphasize shared access, infrastructure preservation and a welcoming experience for residents, visitors and commercial users, while requiring commercial activity permits for certain uses and preserving recreational use without one. Harbor parking map materials show seasonal rules from April 1 through November 1, putting Thursday’s work right in the middle of the town’s busier stretch.

Sunapee’s Highway Department says its mission includes maintaining highways, sidewalks, stormwater systems, bridges, dams and intersection signalization, and the striping project falls squarely within that responsibility. The work also connects to a longer-running Lake Sunapee access issue: a 2018 report from the Lake Sunapee Public Boat Access Development Commission called for near-term expansion of access for trailered boats, part of a broader effort to keep public movement around the lake orderly and available as the season picks up.
