Kamas, Coalville DMV Offices Reopen After Months-Long Closure
Kamas and Coalville DMV offices reopened Monday, March 16, nearly two weeks ahead of their scheduled March 27 reopening date.

The Summit County DMV offices in Kamas and Coalville reopened Monday, March 16, ending a closure that had stretched back to Jan. 12. An announcement posted on social media confirmed the reopening, though official state DMV pages had listed the closure window as running through Friday, March 27, suggesting the two offices came back online roughly 11 days ahead of the previously published schedule.
The closure was attributed to temporary staffing challenges. According to the Park Record, the offices stated they shut down to "ensure continued high-quality service and consistency amid temporary staffing challenges." The staffing picture behind that phrase is stark: Treasurer Corrie Forsling told KPCW that Summit County has just three employees to staff its three DMV locations. The vacancy driving the extended closure followed the departure of a longtime employee whose replacement did not last long in the position. One of the role's minimum requirements is bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English, a threshold that has complicated hiring.
The strain had already produced visible disruptions before the January closure. The Kamas office was closed on Oct. 15, 20, 27 and 29, while the Coalville office closed Oct. 17, 24, 28 and 31, with those dates announced in advance to reduce uncertainty for residents. At a Summit County Council retreat on Oct. 1, a county official described the structural problem plainly. "We're struggling a bit to identify a new candidate for our fourth spot," she said. "Because of the nature of trying to staff three offices with four employees, with one person gone, if one other person has to be out sick — doctor's appointment, child care, for any reason whatsoever — we have to close an office."
Forsling said it takes several weeks to hire and fully train a new employee, which is why closures were scheduled in advance rather than announced day-of. Despite the disruptions, county spokesperson Bridget Noble told KPCW that Summit County is not considering consolidating the DMVs at this time.

Now that Kamas and Coalville are back open, both operate on limited weekly schedules. The Kamas office at 110 North Main Street is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The Coalville office, located at the County Courthouse at 60 North Main Street, is open Tuesday and Friday during the same hours. Both offices close for a midday break from 12:30 to 2 p.m. daily, and neither processes titles after 4:30 p.m. Arriving at least 30 minutes before the 4:45 p.m. closing time is recommended to allow enough time to complete transactions.
The Park City office at 1885 West Ute Boulevard in Kimball Junction remains open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., with the same midday closure. That location served as the primary in-person alternative during the months Kamas and Coalville were dark.
None of the three Summit County offices offer driver licensing services; those are handled by the State of Utah Driver License Division. VIN inspections are not available for oversized vehicles, trailers, or trailered vehicles such as boats, snowmobiles or off-highway vehicles. Most services, with the exception of out-of-state title transfers, can be completed online at dmv.utah.gov/dmv-services. Residents with questions can reach the county DMV by phone at (435) 336-3051 or by email at dmv@summitcountyutah.gov.
