Elgin Museum Receives Oregon 250 Grant to Celebrate America's Semiquincentennial

The Elgin Museum and Historical Society is set to bring a piece of Union County's financial past to life after the America 250 Oregon Commission named it among 21 Oregon organizations sharing nearly $60,000 in third-round grant funding announced March 26.

The museum's award, capped at $3,000 under program rules, will fund an interactive exhibit tracing the history of the Elgin Bank and its role in the community, connecting that local story to broader themes in U.S. banking history through hands-on learning activities. The project is part of a statewide push to mark America's semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026.

The Oregon 250 Grant Program, administered in partnership with Oregon Heritage and the Oregon Historical Society, has now awarded more than $184,000 to 59 organizations across three funding cycles since launching in September 2025. Funding for the program was appropriated by the Oregon State Legislature to the Oregon Historical Society to support the commission's work.

Kerry Tymchuk, chair of the America 250 Oregon Commission and executive director of the Oregon Historical Society, framed the awards in terms of the state's geographic and cultural range. "With recipients in communities across all corners of Oregon, these grants represent Oregon's commitment to commemorating America's 250th birthday in ways that reflect the unique character of our state," Tymchuk said. "From highlighting Indigenous histories to honoring the sacrifice of Oregon's veterans to instilling a love of history in our youth, these initiatives provide an opportunity for Oregonians to engage in our shared story. We are grateful to the Oregon State Legislature for providing the funds that made these grants possible."

The Elgin Museum has been building toward projects like this one throughout the past year. The Roundhouse Foundation awarded the organization $1,200 in April 2025, followed by $350 from the Union County Chamber of Commerce and a $4,910 award from the Oregon Heritage State Historic Preservation Office in May 2025. Two additional Oregon Heritage grants were recorded in June 2025, including funding tied to digitizing the Elgin Recorder archive.

Other third-round recipients include the Umatilla County Historical Society, which will use its grant to create a community storytelling time capsule intended to be opened in 2076, and the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology, which will bring free pop-up exhibits and performances to rural communities in Baker, Grant, and Jackson counties during its summer field school.

Organizations seeking their own piece of the program's final round have a short runway. A fourth and final funding cycle opens Monday, April 13, at 9 a.m. with $60,000 available, half of which is reserved for rural communities. Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis through an online application form that goes live at that same 9 a.m. start time and remains open until funds run out.
