Union County Passenger Arrested for DUII After Grabbing I-84 Steering Wheel
A passenger on I-84 grabbed the steering wheel, forcing the vehicle into the median; he was arrested on DUII and other charges, highlighting risks for drivers on Union County highways.

A passenger who grabbed the steering wheel of a westbound Nissan Rogue on I-84 was arrested after the vehicle left the freeway and entered the median, according to Oregon State Police. The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, near milepost 279 westbound north of North Powder; no crash was reported and the driver was able to correct the vehicle and stop to call 911.
Oregon State Police detailed the response in a press log: “Troopers responded to a 911 open line where a disturbance was heard in the background. Troopers arrived on scene and learned an adult male passenger grabbed the steering wheel of the vehicle and jerked it while his girlfriend drove down the freeway, causing the vehicle to leave the freeway into the median. The female driver was able to correct the vehicle and stopped to call 911.
The male was subsequently taken into custody for DUII, Recklessly Endangering Another Person and Reckless Driving. A warrant was obtained for his blood which was seized. The male was then lodged at the Union County Jail for the listed crimes.”
The passenger was identified as 27-year-old Mitchell Wade Stuart of Painesville, Ohio. Stuart faces charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII), Recklessly Endangering Another Person and Reckless Driving. Oregon State Police obtained a warrant for his blood, which was seized at the scene, and Stuart was lodged at the Union County Jail pending further legal processing.
For Union County motorists, the episode underscores how quickly routine travel on I-84 can become dangerous. Milepost 279 sits along a stretch of highway that serves both local traffic and long-distance freight, meaning an out-of-control vehicle can pose risks to multiple drivers and first responders. The call that prompted officers to the scene was an open 911 line with a disturbance audible in the background, illustrating the role that timely public reporting plays in averting crashes and assisting law enforcement.
The arrest raises questions for local officials about resource allocation for highway patrol and emergency response on rural stretches of interstate. State police conducted the arrest and obtained a blood warrant, reflecting standard investigatory steps in suspected impairment cases. Stuart’s booking at the Union County Jail initiates the local criminal process that will move into Union County courts for arraignment and prosecution.
Residents concerned about highway safety should remain vigilant and report dangerous driving by calling 911. This incident serves as a reminder that prevention often depends on bystander reporting and timely law enforcement action; it also signals potential areas for local discussion about enforcement presence and public education on passenger conduct and impaired driving.
