Max Square in La Grande becomes the gathering point this Saturday when Union County Unite holds its third "No Kings" rally, set to begin at 2 p.m. on March 28.

The event will feature speakers and a presentation on the group's new "signs of freedom" project, a partner to its earlier "signs of facism" initiative. Departing from the black-and-white attire and signage that marked previous rallies, participants will arrive in full color. The signs of freedom will carry the group's "dreams for a free and democratic nation," with messaging focused on free and fair elections, reasonable cost of living and access to public lands.

Union County Unite describes itself as a local grassroots community group that organizes pro-democracy events with the goal of bringing people together in nonpartisan resistance. The organization states the rally's purpose is "to defend international norms of peace, voting rights and American democracy as part of the national movement to resist executive overreach and unconstitutional attacks on democratic systems, the rule of law and civil rights." The rally is aligned with the 50501 movement, the Rural Organizing Project and Indivisible, and the League of Women Voters serves as a national sponsor of the broader No Kings movement.

A food drive will run alongside the rally. Union County Unite said in its press release that "participants will be collecting food for vulnerable students who are often afraid to leave the Eastern Oregon University campus due to harassment over race, national origin or gender identity."

The organization has reserved Max Square and says volunteer teams will be on hand to facilitate a "smooth, safe and family-friendly event."
