Warm Spell, Heavy Rain Raise Flood Risk for Union County Streams
NWS Pendleton warned this week that heavy rain combined with an unusual warm spell could push Northern Blue Mountains streams above normal levels.

The National Weather Service office in Pendleton flagged an elevated flood risk for Union County this week, warning that a combination of heavy precipitation and an unseasonably warm stretch could push streams and rivers in the Northern Blue Mountains above their normal levels.
The agency issued the hydrologic outlook on March 12 and 13, cautioning that the two conditions together create a compounding hazard. Heavy rainfall saturates the ground and swells waterways directly, while warm temperatures accelerate snowmelt in the Blue Mountains, sending additional runoff into already-stressed stream channels at the same time.
The Northern Blue Mountains drain into waterways that run through and around Union County, making the timing and intensity of spring warm spells a recurring concern for communities in the region. When snowpack that would otherwise melt gradually over weeks is pushed out by a sudden temperature spike, local streams can rise quickly, leaving little time for residents along lower reaches to respond.
NWS Pendleton did not issue a flood watch or warning alongside the hydrologic outlook, which is a longer-range planning tool meant to alert emergency managers and the public to elevated potential rather than imminent danger. The distinction matters: a hydrologic outlook signals that conditions are trending toward a problem, giving people time to monitor stream levels and move property or livestock away from flood-prone areas before water actually rises.
With the warm spell already underway as of March 14, residents near creeks and low-lying areas in Union County should keep a close watch on NWS updates. Conditions can shift quickly when snowmelt and rainfall arrive together in the Blue Mountains, and forecasts for the coming days will determine whether the outlook escalates to a more urgent advisory.
