Centre County Man Charged After Arranging Altered Shotgun Sale in Union County
Shaun Michael Arthur, 28, of Spring Mills faces two felony counts after allegedly arranging to buy a shotgun with a defaced serial number in a Union County controlled delivery.

Shaun Michael Arthur, 28, of Spring Mills walked into a controlled delivery coordinated by law enforcement and allegedly arranged to purchase a shotgun with an altered or defaced serial number, according to Pennsylvania State Police at the Milton barracks.
Arthur faces two felony counts of possessing a firearm with an altered serial number, along with a charge of criminal use of a communication facility. State Trooper Kevin Bencsics of the Milton State Police Barracks filed the charges in the Mifflinburg office of District Judge Jeffrey Mensch.
The criminal use of a communication facility charge suggests investigators believe Arthur used a phone or other electronic means to set up the transaction, though state police have not publicly detailed which communications were involved. The controlled delivery, coordinated with law enforcement, points to a sting-style operation in which investigators say Arthur knowingly sought to obtain the illegally marked weapon in Union County.
Defacing or altering a firearm's serial number is a federal and state crime precisely because it strips away the traceability that allows law enforcement to link weapons to crimes, transfers, and prior owners. Possessing such a firearm carries felony-level exposure under Pennsylvania law regardless of whether the possessor altered the number themselves.
Arthur's Centre County hometown of Spring Mills sits roughly 25 miles west of Mifflinburg, placing him outside his home county when the alleged transaction unfolded. No bail or bond information, court date, or defense counsel has been disclosed in connection with the case.
