Fancy Pheasant Boutique Opens on Lewisburg's Historic Market Street
Irons, a Lewisburg native, and her friend Porter, a former Charleston children's store owner, opened The Fancy Pheasant on Market Street last week betting the area lacked quality menswear.

Irons, a Lewisburg native who moved back home to raise her children after college, spotted an about-to-be-vacant Market Street storefront and made a quick decision: she and her friend Porter would fill it with menswear, Pima cotton children's frocks, and home goods that neither woman could find locally. The Fancy Pheasant held its soft opening March 31 to a crowd of friends and neighbors, staking its claim as downtown Lewisburg's newest boutique.
The central bet is on an unmet local need. "As far as the men, I just think there's a need locally and regionally for men's wear," Irons said. The children's section leans into classic silhouettes: smocked styles and pieces cut from Pima cotton, a long-staple fiber prized for softness and durability. Home goods round out the inventory, drawing on both owners' domestic instincts. "We're both moms and we enjoy homemaking so that was our inspiration for the home decor side of things," Irons said.
The partnership formed from a conversation about boredom. Irons was a stay-at-home mom; Porter was an empty-nester. When news reached them that a space on Market Street would soon sit empty, they moved fast. "We got word that the space was going to become vacant so we immediately jumped on that and then it snowballed," Irons said. Porter brought direct retail experience to the equation: she previously owned a children's store in Charleston and carries an interior design background that shapes the shop's aesthetic.

Lewisburg's Market Street corridor draws a mix of students, year-round residents, and tourists who tend to favor independent shops over chain retail. A March opening positions The Fancy Pheasant to build regulars through spring before summer visitor traffic peaks and the academic cycle restarts in the fall.
