Lewisburg Boys Basketball Faces Pope John Paul II in PIAA 4A Second Round

Lewisburg's boys basketball team heads to Martz Hall in Pottsville tonight for a 6 p.m. PIAA Class 4A second-round showdown against Pope John Paul II, with a quarterfinal berth on the line for whichever team survives.

Lewisburg arrived at the second round after turning in a convincing 70-54 first-round win over Big Spring. The Green Dragons enter the matchup listed as a top-seeded District-level entrant, a designation that reflects the program's standing heading into the state bracket's final 16 teams.

Pope John Paul II, the Golden Panthers out of Montgomery County, bring their own first-round momentum into the game. Senior forward Jack Kessler powered PJP past Murrell Dobbins Tech in the opening round, posting a career-high 28 points in a lopsided victory. Reports of the final score differ slightly between sources, listing the margin as either 59-28 or 58-29, but the dominant nature of the win is not in question.

The winner of tonight's game will advance to face either Archbishop Carroll or Bishop McDevitt in the quarterfinals on Friday. That bracket is set to play out Tuesday night as well, with Archbishop Carroll taking on Bishop McDevitt at 7 p.m. at Exeter Township High School in Reading. Carroll knocked off Wyomissing 77-52 in the first round behind senior guard Ian Williams, who contributed 29 points and five assists. McDevitt handled Mt. Carmel Area 78-34 in its opener.

Martz Hall, a landmark venue for Pennsylvania high school basketball in the Schuylkill region, serves as the neutral site for tonight's Lewisburg-PJP contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
