Lewisburg closes Kidsburg and Nature Play for maintenance Monday

Parents who headed to Hufnagle Park for a morning visit found Kidsburg and Nature Play closed off for most of the day, as Lewisburg Borough shut the playground areas from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday for maintenance. The borough asked the public not to enter until Public Works reopened the facilities later in the day.

The closure hit one of downtown Lewisburg’s most recognizable family stops at the start of a summer week, when children, parents and visitors are most likely to use the park. For anyone planning a lunch break, a morning outing or a quick stop with young children, the timing covered nearly the entire day and left little room to wait out the work.

Families looking for another place to go that morning had a clear nearby option: Lewisburg Area Recreation Park at St. Mary Street and North 15th Street. The borough and the Buffalo Valley Recreation Authority list a playground there, along with a swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, a skate park, soccer fields, exercise area and walking paths. That made it the most direct substitute for anyone needing a full play space while Kidsburg was unavailable.

Monday’s shutdown fit a pattern of upkeep at Hufnagle Park, where borough crews have repeatedly had to balance heavy use with maintenance and restoration. In June 2021, Lewisburg announced a larger closure in the park for the Mixed-Use Path, Nature Play and Floodplain Restoration Project, with the Kidsburg playground area set to close for demolition and removal work. A later update said the Hufnagle Park parking lot and St. Louis Street had reopened and that Kidsburg was expected to reopen the morning of June 25, 2021.

The borough celebrated the reopening of Kidsburg and the Hufnagle Park south area on June 24, 2022, after that project delivered a shared-use trail from Market Street to the edge of Bucknell University’s campus, realigned Limestone, or Bull Run, to improve water quality and restore the floodplain, and added a nature-based play area. In October 2022, Lewisburg also closed the Nature Play Area for the season after a hot, dry summer and heavy use kept the grass from rooting properly.

The short closure Monday showed the same reality: Kidsburg is one of Lewisburg’s most heavily used public spaces, and keeping it safe and functional sometimes means shutting it down, even briefly, for work that residents and visitors rarely see but quickly feel.
