Lewisburg shifts Memorial Day trash pickup to Wednesday

Lewisburg Borough moved Monday refuse pickup to Wednesday, May 27, for households north of Market Street from the Reading rail line east to the Susquehanna River, and the borough said the makeup route ran with regular Wednesday collection. No other pickup days changed, so residents outside that Monday route stayed on their normal schedule.

The borough posted the notice on Tuesday, May 26, one day after Memorial Day fell on Monday, May 25. For Monday-route households, the practical instruction was simple: keep trash at the curb for Wednesday service, not Monday, and expect the truck to come through with the borough’s other Wednesday pickups.

Lewisburg’s regular refuse map splits the borough into distinct service zones. Tuesday pickup covers the area south of Market Street from the Reading rail line east to the Susquehanna River. Wednesday service is reserved for commercial accounts, dumpster placement and removal, and large-appliance pickups. Thursday pickup serves the area between the Reading rail line and Route 15 from the southern to the northern borough boundary, while Friday pickup covers the area west of Route 15.

Memorial Day is one of the borough’s no-pickup holidays, along with New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, the Monday following Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Lewisburg Borough describes itself as a historic Susquehanna River community in Union County and a primary commercial center in the county, where a one-day change can ripple through apartment buildings, businesses, and tightly packed residential blocks.

The 2026 notice followed the same pattern Lewisburg has used in prior years. The borough posted similar Memorial Day refuse adjustments in 2021, 2022, and 2025, underscoring that the holiday shift is a routine part of municipal operations rather than an unusual disruption.

Residents who wanted to confirm their route before putting containers out could check the borough’s refuse-and-recycling schedule, which lists the weekday collection zones and holiday closures. For this Memorial Day cycle, the key point remained unchanged: Monday service shifted to Wednesday, and the rest of Lewisburg stayed on schedule.
