Tropical Smoothie Cafe opens in Lewisburg on AJK Boulevard

Tropical Smoothie Cafe has opened at 195 AJK Blvd. in Lewisburg, adding a national chain to the Walmart side of the borough’s retail corridor and giving AJK Boulevard another breakfast-to-dinner stop. Restaurant manager Het Patel said the cafe was meant to create jobs, offer something fresh and different, and give the community a new gathering place.

Patel, a Danville High School graduate, said the Lewisburg store grew out of his family’s first restaurant venture together. He said he came out of college with an MBA and chose the restaurant business because he wanted something “new and challenging” with a visible impact in the community.

The Lewisburg opening ties into a brand with a long national run. Tropical Smoothie Cafe began in Destin, Florida, in 1997 and opened its first franchise in Tallahassee in 1998. The company says it has since opened its 1,000th cafe and recorded 12 consecutive years of positive same-store-sales growth, a record that helps explain why the chain has continued expanding beyond larger metro markets.

Patel said the menu fits Lewisburg because it offers healthy, flexible choices and enough variety for repeat visits. Tropical Smoothie Cafe is built around customizable smoothies, smoothie bowls, flatbreads and wraps, and the company describes the food as made-to-order with a healthy appeal. That mix is aimed at customers who want something quick but not limited to one meal daypart.

The buildout took about a year and a half, and the location had previously been an electrician’s shop near Walmart’s Lewisburg Supercenter at 120 AJK Blvd. That puts the cafe directly on one of the borough’s busiest commercial stretches, where shopping traffic already flows past a major national retailer.

Patel said franchise trainers helped prepare staff before opening day, and new employees went through several days of training so the operation would feel settled when customers arrived. He said early feedback has been positive, especially from customers who can sit at a bar and watch smoothies being made.

The cafe’s Lewisburg location page lists it as open and shows nightly hours through 9 p.m. The posted schedule is 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends, positioning it for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-afternoon traffic from shoppers, Bucknell University families and commuters moving along AJK Boulevard.
