Union County plans countywide America 250 celebration in 2026

Union County declared July 2026 as America 250 Month, setting up a countywide observance for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026. The county’s approach points beyond a single ceremony and toward a broader effort to shape how Lewisburg, Mifflinburg, New Berlin and surrounding townships tell their own history.

The Union County Historical Society is positioned to play a central role. It says it has promoted the history of Union County, Pennsylvania for more than 100 years through educational programs, displays, publications, events and celebrations, and its office and research library are on the first floor of the Union County Courthouse in Lewisburg. That courthouse location gives residents a fixed place to turn for records and local-history material as the America 250 observance takes shape.

Lewisburg Borough’s history adds another specific thread organizers can use. The borough says Lewisburg began its origination in 1769 and sits on the east side of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. Mifflinburg’s history, as preserved by the historical society, reaches back to land received from the Penn Proprietors by Ensigns Foster and McMeen for service in the French and Indian War. Those dates and names give the county a local narrative that is older than the nation itself, and they place the anniversary in a setting with deep colonial-era roots.

A countywide planning effort also opens the door to concrete public programming. Exhibits, ceremonies, school projects, lectures, heritage walks and other events could give families, students, veterans groups and community organizations a way to take part without waiting for a single large festival. That kind of format would let organizers spread the celebration across boroughs, schools, libraries, historical groups and public spaces, rather than concentrate it in one place.

Union County is not acting in isolation. Montgomery County, Upper Merion Township, York County, Dauphin County, Mercer County and Delaware County have already created America 250 pages or event hubs of their own, showing how Pennsylvania communities are building local observances around the national milestone. In Union County, the focus is less on a generic anniversary than on deciding which local places, stories and institutions should stand for the county when the 250th birthday is marked.
