WellSpan Expands AI Across System, Aims to Speed Critical Diagnoses

Aidoc and WellSpan Health announced a planned system wide rollout of the Aidoc aiOS artificial intelligence operating system, a step that will bring algorithm driven analysis into more parts of clinical care across nine hospitals and more than 250 care locations. The expansion will activate 21 new AI enabled clinical pathways spanning seven service lines including cardiology, vascular surgery and neuroscience, and integrate those pathways with WellSpan’s Epic electronic medical record and imaging environment.

Aidoc said it analyzed more than 200,000 patient cases across the WellSpan enterprise in the past year and flagged more than 10,000 potentially critical findings, such as pulmonary emboli, brain hemorrhage and vessel occlusions. WellSpan and Aidoc framed the expansion as a way to speed diagnoses, reduce imaging triage bottlenecks and relieve pressure from radiology staffing shortages that many health systems face.

For Union County residents who receive care through WellSpan facilities, the expanded use of AI could mean faster identification of emergencies that depend on timely imaging interpretation, and quicker routing to specialists when time is critical. The inclusion of cardiology and neuroscience pathways may be particularly relevant for stroke and heart attack care where minutes can affect outcomes.
