WellSpan Expands AI Across System, Aims to Speed Critical Diagnoses

Aidoc announced on December 10, 2025 that WellSpan Health will expand use of the aiOS artificial intelligence platform across its entire enterprise, extending beyond radiology triage into the Epic electronic medical record and imaging systems. The move could speed diagnosis of life threatening conditions and ease radiology bottlenecks for patients who rely on WellSpan services in Union County, while raising questions about oversight, equity, and workforce impacts.

Aidoc and WellSpan Health announced a planned system wide rollout of the Aidoc aiOS artificial intelligence operating system, a step that will bring algorithm driven analysis into more parts of clinical care across nine hospitals and more than 250 care locations. The expansion will activate 21 new AI enabled clinical pathways spanning seven service lines including cardiology, vascular surgery and neuroscience, and integrate those pathways with WellSpan’s Epic electronic medical record and imaging environment.

Aidoc said it analyzed more than 200,000 patient cases across the WellSpan enterprise in the past year and flagged more than 10,000 potentially critical findings, such as pulmonary emboli, brain hemorrhage and vessel occlusions. WellSpan and Aidoc framed the expansion as a way to speed diagnoses, reduce imaging triage bottlenecks and relieve pressure from radiology staffing shortages that many health systems face.

For Union County residents who receive care through WellSpan facilities, the expanded use of AI could mean faster identification of emergencies that depend on timely imaging interpretation, and quicker routing to specialists when time is critical. The inclusion of cardiology and neuroscience pathways may be particularly relevant for stroke and heart attack care where minutes can affect outcomes. Patients who seek care at smaller clinics or during off hours may see the most immediate operational impact if AI helps prioritize studies for human review.

At the same time, the rollout underscores broader public health and policy considerations. Expanding algorithmic tools into core clinical workflows raises questions about validation across diverse patient populations, transparency of decision support logic, data governance and patient privacy. There are also workforce implications for radiologists, technologists and clinicians who must learn new workflows and trust machine flagged results without over relying on them.

Health systems, regulators and local policymakers will need to balance potential improvements in access and speed against risks of bias, unequal performance across subgroups and the need for clear oversight. For Union County, the immediate effect may be faster identification of critical findings, but lasting benefit will depend on careful implementation, staff training and monitoring to ensure equitable outcomes across all communities served by WellSpan.
