Del Rio High School golf tournament raises scholarship funds Saturday

Every entry in the Del Rio High School Golf Boosters’ annual scholarship tournament will do more than fill a summer tee sheet at San Felipe Springs Golf Course. The June 27 fundraiser sends proceeds directly to the DRHS Golf Booster Scholarship Fund, turning a community golf day into student support for Del Rio High School and the activities tied to the program.

Registration opens before the 8 a.m. shotgun start, and the field is capped at 18 four-person teams. Entry is $125 per player, with breakfast and lunch included, making the tournament a full-day event for golfers, parents, alumni and other supporters at San Felipe Springs, 1524 E Highway 90 in Del Rio.

The competition will also carry real prize money. The tournament is set to pay $1,200 for first place, $800 for second place and $600 for third place, a structure that gives the fundraiser the feel of a serious local competition as well as a scholarship drive. Ram Country has added another incentive: a new vehicle will go to anyone who makes a hole-in-one on the designated hole.

For Del Rio families, that matters because the money stays close to home. Every team that signs up adds to a scholarship pool built around Del Rio High School golfers and related student activities, which helps keep the program supported through the summer and beyond. In a community where extracurricular programs rely heavily on local backing, the tournament gives residents a concrete way to put dollars behind student opportunity.

The event also fits into a long golf tradition in Del Rio. The town’s San Felipe Mustang Golf team won the Texas state high school golf championship in 1957, a landmark that remains part of local sports history. More recently, Del Rio High School boys golf has won back-to-back District 30-6A team crowns in 2026, with head coach Oscar Cardenas at the center of the program’s current success.
