Nearly 10,000 people streamed through Laughlin Air Force Base's gates on March 28, turning Del Rio's flightline into one of the most heavily attended single-day public events the city has seen in years. Base security and visitor control processed the crowd as vehicles queued into surrounding roads during peak arrival hours, with city and county services working alongside the installation to manage the flow.

The morning opened under an overcast sky. Mist and low clouds forced organizers from the 47th Flying Training Wing to push the schedule back roughly one hour, leaving the crowd waiting on the tarmac before conditions finally lifted. The payoff was immediate: once the program resumed, a parachutist descended from approximately 5,000 feet carrying the American flag to the flightline, setting up the National Anthem before aerial demonstrations began in earnest.

The advertised performer list delivered. The F-35A Demo Team ran through its high-performance routine above Del Rio, joined by T-38 Talons and a lineup of fighter aircraft and historic warbirds. Static displays on the ground allowed families to walk the flightline within arm's reach of aircraft that rarely appear outside restricted airspace, with airmen available throughout the day to field questions about the base's training mission.

A second major draw ran alongside the aerial program: a family-focused STEAM expo designed to link the day's flight demonstrations to careers in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. The exhibits formed a core part of the 47th Flying Training Wing's stated purpose for the event, which the base framed as a chance to showcase its mission to develop mission-ready, resilient airmen, leaders and families while opening the installation's gates to the surrounding community.

The crowd's size translated directly into economic activity across Del Rio. Hotels, restaurants and shops absorbed a surge in visitors throughout the weekend, with the single-day total of nearly 10,000 representing a substantial bump for the city's hospitality and retail sectors.

The logistical scale of Fiesta of Flight, which required FAA airspace coordination alongside base security, visitor control, and local city and county services, gives Laughlin planners a substantial data set for future programming. With turnout at that level, the case for recurring open-house events is considerably stronger heading into planning for the next one.
