San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated ISD Delays Monday Start, Cancels Weekend Activities
San Felipe Del Rio CISD announced a delayed start for Monday, Jan 26, and canceled Saturday activities due to forecasted extreme cold and a winter storm watch affecting Del Rio.

San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District announced on Jan 22 that it will delay the start of classes on Monday, Jan 26, and cancel extracurricular competitions scheduled for Saturday as a precaution against forecasted winter weather. National Weather Service updates show an Extreme Cold Watch and Winter Storm Watch for the Del Rio area late Saturday into Monday morning, with below-freezing temperatures and a risk of rain changing to freezing rain as temperatures fall.
Under the district plan, elementary classes will begin at 9:45 a.m. with bus routes starting at 9:00 a.m. Secondary classes for grades 6-12 will begin at 10:30 a.m. with bus routes beginning at 9:30 a.m. Security personnel are asked to report at 7:00 a.m., essential staff including cafeteria staff, custodians and maintenance at 8:30 a.m., all campus staff 45 minutes before classes begin, and non-campus administrative and support staff at 10:00 a.m. The district said it will continue to monitor conditions and post updates as needed.

The decision affects routine schedules for thousands of students, parents and employees across Val Verde County. Later bus routes and staggered start times can complicate work schedules for parents who rely on standard school hours for childcare. Cafeteria staff reporting at 8:30 a.m. may alter meal-service timing, and the cancellation of Saturday competitions removes local weekend activity that typically draws families, volunteers and small-scale revenue for food vendors and nearby businesses.
Road safety is a primary concern. The forecasted transition from rain to freezing rain raises the risk of icy surfaces on bridges, overpasses and less-traveled county roads. Del Rio residents should expect hazardous travel conditions and plan for slower commutes if travel becomes necessary. School transportation officials have adjusted bus departure times, but parents should allow extra time and confirm route information with district communications before Monday.
Beyond the immediate disruption, the episode highlights the economic frictions extreme weather imposes on small communities. Delays and cancellations interrupt labor supply, constrain retail and service income tied to school events, and add logistical strain to school operations. For households without flexible work options, the combined effect of schedule shifts and hazardous roads can create short-term income and childcare pressures.
San Felipe Del Rio CISD urged residents to stay weather aware as conditions evolve and said further adjustments will be communicated if necessary. For now, families should note the revised start and bus times, expect Saturday cancellations to remain in place, and prepare for potentially icy roads over the weekend. The district’s monitoring will determine whether additional measures are required before Monday.
