Sul Ross State University's Rio Grande College of Business announced the creation of a Master of Science in International Business, known as the MSIB, the university's latest move in a rapid expansion of graduate offerings that now spans finance, applied economics, and management alongside the new degree.

The program is designed to prepare students for leadership in today's interconnected global economy and will be offered beginning Fall 2026. The curriculum covers advanced coursework in international economics, financial management, marketing, strategy, communication, information systems and organizational change.

What distinguishes the MSIB from a traditional MBA is its applied orientation toward cross-border work. Applied learning and cross-cultural case studies equip students to analyze global markets, lead diverse teams, and design sustainable cross-border growth strategies. The program then puts that preparation to a practical test: the MSIB culminates in a capstone project where students address a real-world international business challenge by integrating finance, marketing, strategy and digital tools into an actionable executive plan.

Dean Dr. Sumantra Sengupta tied the program directly to Texas's economic position. "Texas continues to be at the epicenter of International/Cross border businesses," Sengupta said. "Our workforce development needs will require advanced capabilities at the intersection of globalization, marketing, and finance."

The MSIB is the third new Sul Ross graduate business program announced for Fall 2026. One week before the MSIB announcement, the university published news that the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved a new Master of Science in Applied Economics, also set to launch in Fall 2026. Before that, THECB approved a new Master of Science in Finance program, set to launch in Fall 2026. Together, the three programs signal a deliberate push by the Rio Grande College of Business to fill a gap in graduate-level, career-specific business education in Southwest Texas.

The college's reach runs deep in the region. The Rio Grande College of Business provides experiential business education across Sul Ross State University's four campuses in Alpine, Eagle Pass, Del Rio, and Uvalde, as well as online. More than 80% of RGCOB faculty hold terminal degrees. Del Rio sits squarely within Val Verde County, making the graduate expansion directly relevant to residents here who may want to pursue advanced study without relocating.

The MSIB announcement also arrives as Sul Ross deepens its ties to Texas State University. The Texas State University System Board of Regents approved a co-enrollment partnership at its quarterly meeting in February, giving place-bound students in West Texas a streamlined path to degrees from both institutions simultaneously. That partnership is separate from the MSIB launch but reflects the same institutional logic: expanding access to high-value credentials in a region historically underserved by graduate business education.

The MSIB expands the Rio Grande College of Business's specialized graduate offerings and reinforces Sul Ross State University's commitment to delivering career-focused education aligned with regional and global economic needs.
