Val Verde County appraisal board schedules July property-tax protest hearings

At its 8:30 a.m. July 9 meeting in Del Rio, the Appraisal Review Board set aside four hearing sessions, with hearings continuing July 10, July 13 and July 14, then resuming July 15, July 17, July 20 and July 21 at the appraisal district meeting room on West Cantu Road. A board notice filed with the county clerk on June 1 at 4:17 p.m. set the dates.

The board will hear and determine taxpayer appeals on all matters allowed under the Texas Property Tax Code, including late protest letters. The ARB is the formal local forum where owners can dispute appraised values, correct records and challenge assessments that drive tax bills for homes, ranches and businesses across the county. Under Texas Comptroller guidance, most protests are due by May 15 or 30 days after the appraisal notice is mailed, whichever is later, while appraisal notices are generally required by May 1, or by April 1 for residence homesteads.

Before a formal hearing, taxpayers may ask for an informal conference with the appraisal district. If the owner is still dissatisfied after the ARB rules, the next steps can include state district court, the State Office of Administrative Hearings or regular binding arbitration, depending on the property and the facts of the case.
