Dr. Jonathan Hoskins’ death removes a key orthopedic specialist from Val Verde Regional Medical Center at a time when Del Rio patients often depend on a small number of local doctors for fracture care, sports injuries and joint problems. The hospital said Thursday afternoon that Hoskins was found dead at his home Thursday morning after local authorities performed a welfare check when he did not show up for work.

Hoskins had come to Del Rio in 2024 as part of Val Verde Regional’s push to expand orthopedic and specialty care. His practice focused on orthopedic sports medicine and fracture care, putting him in line for the kinds of cases that can disrupt daily life fast in Val Verde County, from school-athletics injuries to workplace strains and joint pain. The hospital’s orthopedic team says it treats diseases and injuries of the bones, muscles, tendons, nerves and ligaments, and its active services listings include Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, Surgical Services and a Rehabilitation Center.

For patients already under Hoskins’ care, the loss could mean delays in follow-up visits, surgery planning and rehabilitation coordination. The hospital has not said how it will cover his caseload or whether another surgeon will step in, leaving an immediate gap in a specialty that is especially important in a border community where a single physician can anchor access for dozens of families. Val Verde Regional has served the community for more than 60 years, and its Legacy Foundation says Del Rio and the surrounding area are still expanding, with the hospital preparing for future healthcare needs.

Hoskins arrived with a long medical background. Val Verde Regional’s spring 2024 newsletter said he was fellowship-trained in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, earned his undergraduate degree at Tennessee State University, received his medical degree from Meharry Medical College, completed a general-surgery internship at the University of Southern California, finished orthopedic surgery residency at One Brooklyn Health Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn and completed a sports-medicine fellowship at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. Physician directories listed him as a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon with 15 to 18 years of experience and a 2008 medical-school graduation year.

Beyond the clinic, Hoskins became part of Del Rio’s athletic life. He worked with a number of Del Rio athletes during his two years here and supported Del Rio High School sports when his schedule allowed, according to local accounts. His death leaves a practical and personal void for families who had come to know him as both a surgeon and a steady presence in the community.
