Belen schools approve 2026-27 calendar, classes start Aug. 7

Belén families will need to get back-to-school plans moving early, because the district’s 2026-27 student calendar starts classes on Friday, Aug. 7, 2026. The Belen Board of Education approved the calendar unanimously, locking in a schedule that shapes childcare, work leave, sports, transportation and school spending across Valencia County.

The district’s public documents page lists the 2026-2027 Student Calendar and identifies Belén Consolidated Schools at 520 North Main Street in Belén. That makes the calendar easy to find for parents and staff who are already lining up summer trips, daycare coverage and the costs that come with a new school year, from supplies and clothes to activity fees.

The calendar follows a traditional schedule with 180 instructional days and no abbreviated days. That matters in a district where every school day is tied to state instructional requirements and teacher planning time, and where calendar changes can ripple through athletics, fine arts and after-school programs well before the first bell rings.

Superintendent Lawrence Sanchez has previously explained that New Mexico Public Education Department rules require 1,140 instructional hours. He also said half-days do not count as instructional days under those rules, and that professional development is built into the teacher contract day, which is seven hours. For 2024-25, the district scheduled four full professional-development days for teachers on July 30-31 and Jan. 2-3, 2025, showing how much of the school calendar is driven by state requirements as well as local needs.

The early August start gives families less room to stretch summer break and more reason to settle plans now. Childcare providers, local employers and school-based programs all have to work from the same calendar, and in Belén that means the board’s approval is more than a formality. It sets the timetable for the year ahead, with Aug. 7 now the date parents and students have to build around.
