Rep. Vasquez, Los Lunas Mayor Discuss Major Boulevard and Infrastructure Projects
Los Lunas Boulevard Corridor Project, called the largest local-led infrastructure effort in New Mexico history, includes a new I-25 interchange and a four-lane Rio Grande bridge.
U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez sat down with Los Lunas Mayor Charles Griego and city council members to discuss the Los Lunas Boulevard Corridor Project, a long-awaited undertaking that the Village of Los Lunas describes as the largest local-led infrastructure effort in New Mexico history, along with broader improvements to roads, waterways, and sidewalks across the district.
The meeting focused on collaborative strategies to deliver safer, more affordable infrastructure throughout NM-02, Vasquez's congressional district, which encompasses Valencia County and the communities most directly affected by the project.
The Los Lunas Boulevard Corridor Project is built around two centerpiece elements: a new I-25 interchange and a four-lane bridge over the Rio Grande. Together, those connections are designed to significantly improve east-west mobility across Valencia County, a corridor that has long lacked direct, high-capacity access between the interstate and communities west of the river. Phase One construction targets three specific outcomes: reducing congestion, improving emergency response times, and opening access to high-growth areas that have gone underserved by existing infrastructure.
Mayor Griego framed the groundbreaking in terms that extended well beyond asphalt and concrete. "This is a historic milestone for our community," he said. "Breaking ground on the Los Lunas Boulevard Corridor isn't just about building a road, it's about building opportunity. This new interchange will reduce congestion on NM 6, improve emergency response, and unlock access to high-growth areas that have been waiting for critical infrastructure investment."

The Middle Rio Grande Economic Development Association attended the groundbreaking ceremony and echoed the project's significance, calling it the largest local-led infrastructure project in New Mexico history and congratulating the Village, project partners, and community members who worked to bring it to fruition.
The Village of Los Lunas had previously announced an anticipated August 2025 groundbreaking for the corridor project. No funding totals, contractor names, or phased completion dates were disclosed in materials released in connection with the Vasquez meeting or the groundbreaking announcement. Rep. Vasquez did not release a public statement through the materials associated with the meeting.
