Valencia County Officials Set Multiple Meetings Addressing Growth and Services
A slate of municipal and special district meetings across Valencia County outlined decisions on zoning, school policies, public safety leadership, water management and flood control. Residents should watch upcoming public hearings and board actions that could affect property development, school operations, local appointments and district finances.

Local governments and special districts in Valencia County released draft agendas that should be considered final only 72 hours before each meeting. The schedule shows a concentration of land-use, governance and fiscal items that have direct implications for property owners, parents, and residents who rely on county services.
Meetings scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 8 included sketch plat reviews at Belen City Hall during a subdivision workshop and a Rio Communities Planning and Zoning Commission hearing that listed replating of Tierra Del Sur lots 3 and 4 and consideration of a conditional use permit for a Bible institute at 382 Rio Communities Blvd. These land-use items speak to ongoing development and how zoning decisions will shape growth patterns in the southern part of the county.
Several Belen planning sessions are set for the coming week. A P&Z workshop on Monday, Jan. 12 will focus on zoning ordinance discussions followed by a regular meeting that evening to elect a chair and vice chair, set rules and procedures, finalize a meeting schedule and hold public hearings including annexation and rezoning matters. The Belen Historic Properties Review Board will meet Tuesday, Jan. 13 at the Belen Harvey House to review mobile display plans, ordinance and Certified Local Government updates, plaques and walking tour elements that tie into heritage preservation and local tourism.
Education governance is also on the calendar. The School of Dreams Academy Governing Council will meet Monday, Jan. 12 to consider an increase for a lease purchase agreement, review the superintendent’s report, address teacher-student communication guidelines, a sex offender policy, sale of school vehicles and budget items. The Belen Board of Education will hold oaths of office and a closed executive session for a superintendent evaluation at its Tuesday, Jan. 13 meeting, along with policy considerations including a non-consensual intimate imagery policy, parental involvement policy changes and multiple donation and grant items.
Special districts and county-level boards will confront fiscal and governance issues. The Valencia Soil and Water Conservation District board will meet Thursday, Jan. 15 at the Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Area Visitor Center to approve measures aimed at preparing for cash flow disruptions tied to the county’s recent property tax bill debacles, take oaths of office, review the treasurer’s report and discuss water rights protest updates. The Valencia Arroyo Flood Control District will meet the same evening in the Valencia County Commission chambers to draw term lengths for elected directors and discuss public participation policies, Open Meetings Act and records act considerations.
Los Lunas officials will consider key appointments at a Thursday, Jan. 15 Village Council meeting, including selection of a village administrator, police chief, fire chief and a mayor pro tem, along with executive session items related to hiring and negotiation strategy for donation and affordable housing.
Taken together, this week’s agendas underscore how planning, fiscal management, school policy and leadership appointments will shape daily life in Valencia County. Residents who may be affected by zoning changes, school policy updates or district budget actions should monitor meeting notices and the 72-hour draft deadline for final agendas.
