Drivers using Vinton County Road 24, better known as Vinton Station Road, faced a full closure at U.S. Route 50 as the county moved ahead with a bridge replacement that is expected to keep the road restricted for about four months.

The shutdown began Monday at the intersection of CR 24 and U.S. Route 50 and extended 0.2 miles south. Local traffic was still being maintained south of the project site, but through traffic was being turned away from the work zone and sent onto a marked detour.

County Engineer Roy A. DePue said drivers needing to bypass the closure were directed west on State Route 93, then south on SR 93 to State Route 324, and east on SR 324 back to CR 24, or Vinton Station Road. The county engineer’s office advised motorists to plan alternate routes while the bridge is replaced.

The Vinton County Engineer’s Office said the project is replacing a critical infrastructure link. That office is responsible for county roads and county bridges, a role that makes the Vinton Station Road span part of the local network DePue and his staff must keep open and safe.

DePue, who has served as Vinton County Engineer since 2017, is overseeing the work as the closure remains in place until further notice. For commuters, farm traffic and anyone moving between the U.S. 50 corridor and points south of the bridge site, the detour will be the main route around the project for the next several months.
