Crabtree Valley Mall to Add Escapology Escape Rooms in 2026 Renovation
Macerich will add a 4,600-square-foot Escapology escape-room venue to Crabtree Valley Mall as part of a renovation, bringing new entertainment, dining, and infrastructure upgrades to the community.

Macerich is remodeling Crabtree Valley Mall with a new entertainment anchor: Escapology, an escape-room franchise that will occupy a 4,600-square-foot space and offer multiple immersive puzzle rooms and themed experiences. The company announced the plan on January 22, 2026, and Escapology is expected to open in early spring 2026 as part of a broader repositioning of the mall.
The renovation package includes upgraded lighting, new lounge furniture throughout the common areas, and stormwater infrastructure work intended to improve site drainage. Macerich is also bringing additional tenants into the center, including a Five Guys restaurant and a Dick’s House of Sport location, signaling a mix of food-and-beverage and experiential retail aimed at increasing dwell time and repeat visits.
For Wake County shoppers, the most immediate change will be the addition of a year-round entertainment option that complements retail and dining. Escape rooms cater to families, friend groups, corporate team-building, and celebrations, potentially boosting weekday traffic and evening activity. Escapology’s 4,600-square-foot footprint will create a destination-style amenity within the mall that could extend visits for customers who also patronize food tenants like Five Guys or other specialty retailers now signing leases.
The project’s infrastructure work has neighborhood implications as well. Stormwater upgrades may reduce localized runoff and strain on municipal systems during heavy rains, and improved lighting and new furnishings will change the day-to-day customer experience inside common areas. These physical improvements, combined with curated tenanting, follow a national pattern of shopping centers shifting toward mixed-use and experiential programming to offset brick-and-mortar retail pressures.
Macerich’s plan to introduce a Dick’s House of Sport location further diversifies the mall’s draw by adding a specialty sports and recreation element that pairs naturally with interactive entertainment. For local small-business owners and service providers that rely on mall foot traffic, the phased openings expected through 2026 could translate into higher customer counts and longer shopping trips.
Construction and tenant build-outs will continue through the first half of 2026, with Escapology slated for early spring. Wake County residents can expect new weekend and evening activity at Crabtree Valley Mall as the center leans into experiences alongside shopping and dining. The additions will test whether experiential attractions can sustain higher traffic and support a broader retail mix in Wake County’s competitive market.
