A Friday afternoon fight at Triangle Town Center ended with four people shot, including a 20-year-old mall employee, and left one of Wake County’s busiest retail centers facing fresh questions about security.

Raleigh police said the shooting broke out around 3:30 p.m. after a verbal altercation between two groups inside the shopping center. Officers said three 17-year-olds confronted the 20-year-old employee, and the dispute escalated quickly into gunfire.

The employee and one juvenile were injured and stayed at the scene until emergency responders arrived. Two other teens fled after the shooting. One of them was later found at a hospital, where police were notified, giving investigators an additional victim to sort into the case. In all, four people were hurt: one adult worker and three teenagers.

Investigators recovered two handguns at the scene, a sign that the confrontation involved more than one weapon and unfolded in a chaotic sequence. Police also counted 14 evidence markers in the mall parking lot, underscoring how much of the scene had to be processed as investigators pieced together who fired first and how the encounter spread from a confrontation inside the mall to gunfire outside.

One juvenile was released to a parent, suggesting the case may move through both juvenile and adult legal channels depending on what detectives and prosecutors determine. The role of the Wake County District Attorney is expected to loom large as police sort out whether charges will be filed against the teens, the employee, or both.

The violence landed at Triangle Town Center, a major North Raleigh retail hub near Capital Boulevard and Interstate 540 that opened on Aug. 14, 2002. For shoppers, workers, and nearby businesses, the timing was especially alarming because the shooting happened in the middle of a busy afternoon, when families and weekend traffic typically fill the property.

The mall had already drawn police attention earlier this month. On Wednesday, April 8, Raleigh officers responded to reports of shots fired outside Triangle Town Center. No victims were reported then, but two people were taken into custody.

The property’s public-safety history also reaches back to 2022, when a deadly shooting outside Triangle Town Center led to an involuntary manslaughter charge. With Friday’s shooting adding another violent episode at the same site, pressure is likely to grow for visible changes in how the mall is policed, monitored, and secured for the people who work and shop there every day.
