Raleigh Teen Arrested After FBI Finds Racially Motivated Mass Shooting Plans
Raleigh's Eric Byrd, 19, was involuntarily committed after FBI and Raleigh police found social media posts showing he idolized mass shooters and held racially motivated violent views.

Eric Byrd, a 19-year-old Raleigh man, was involuntarily committed Thursday after the FBI Raleigh Joint Terrorism Task Force and Raleigh police uncovered social media posts and other evidence indicating he idolized mass shooters and harbored racially motivated violent views, according to court documents.
The investigation, which brought together federal and local law enforcement, was triggered by alarming online activity tied to Byrd. Court documents indicate investigators found evidence of racially motivated ideology alongside what authorities characterized as an expressed interest in mass violence.
The FBI Raleigh Joint Terrorism Task Force, which coordinates federal and local resources to identify and disrupt domestic and international threats before they materialize, took a lead role in the case alongside Raleigh police. Byrd's involuntary commitment, rather than a traditional criminal charge, reflects a legal pathway authorities increasingly use when someone poses an imminent danger to themselves or others but prosecution alone may not immediately neutralize that threat.
Racially motivated violent extremism has been a growing focus for federal law enforcement nationwide, and Raleigh is not immune. The October 2023 Hedingham neighborhood shooting, in which a gunman killed five people, remains a fresh wound for many in Wake County, making threats of this nature particularly charged for local residents.
The case remains under investigation, and no additional charges had been publicly announced as of Friday morning.
