Arizona Western College’s biggest commencement yet sent more than 3,200 degrees and occupational certificates into Yuma County’s workforce Friday night, a record turnout that points to how much of the region’s talent pipeline is being built locally. The ceremony at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Yuma drew thousands of students and families and marked the largest graduating class in the college’s history.

The class was not limited to Arizona Western College students alone. Graduates from Northern Arizona University-Yuma, Arizona State University-Yuma and University of Arizona-Yuma also took part, underscoring how closely Yuma’s higher-education network is tied together. That matters in a county where employers in healthcare, public service, business, agriculture, manufacturing and technical fields continue to need trained workers who can move quickly from classroom to jobsite.

Arizona Western College says it serves Yuma and La Paz counties through more than 10 locations across 10,000 square miles, and that all three Arizona state universities are based on its Yuma campus for face-to-face classes. The college also offers more than 100 degrees and certificates in academic and career-and-technical programs, a breadth that helps explain why its commencement has become more than a campus event. It is one of the clearest annual snapshots of how many people are finishing credentials that can keep them in Yuma County, transfer them to four-year programs, or send them into jobs that are in short supply.

The scale of this year’s ceremony also shows steady growth from recent years. KYMA reported that AWC honored more than 2,500 graduates at its 2025 commencement, while KAWC reported 3,150 degrees and certificates for the 2025 credential total, counting Summer 2024, Fall 2024 and Spring 2025. This year’s total climbed even higher, reinforcing AWC’s role as a major engine for local economic mobility.

That role stretches back decades. Arizona Western College says it began offering learning opportunities in the fall of 1963, and the institution has since grown into a regional hub for students balancing work, family and school without leaving Yuma County. In a county where workforce needs are immediate and higher education is often tied directly to upward mobility, Friday’s record commencement showed the college exporting fewer students and graduating more of them into local opportunity.
