ECH Yuma and Vitalant Host Community Blood Drive April 8
ECH Yuma and Vitalant need Yuma donors April 8 for a 3-hour drive; Arizona requires 700 blood donors every single day.

Arizona's hospitals need 700 blood donors every single day, and on Wednesday Yuma will have three hours to help close that gap. Exceptional Community Hospital (ECH Yuma) and Vitalant are partnering for a community blood drive on April 8 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at ECH Yuma, 2648 S. Araby Rd., with Vitalant representatives on site to accept donations.
"Every time you donate you're able to save two to three lives," said Lisa Brazeel, ECH Yuma's Community Liaison. "Which is so important and in Arizona alone, we need 700 donors per day."
The stakes are concrete. According to Vitalant, about one in every seven hospital patients in Arizona requires a blood transfusion, and community-sponsored drives like this one account for more than half of the entire state blood supply. Units collected Wednesday will go directly toward patient care at ECH Yuma, supporting trauma cases in the emergency department, scheduled surgeries, cancer treatment, and obstetric care for mothers and newborns.
Jasmine Lara, ECH Yuma's Laboratory Manager, says each donation reaches further than most donors expect, with a single unit capable of helping multiple patients across different treatment needs.
Getting in and out in roughly 15 minutes starts with booking a slot through Vitalant's scheduling portal before Wednesday morning. Walk-ins will be accommodated as capacity allows, but appointments cut wait time significantly. Donors should arrive having eaten a nutritious meal, well-hydrated, with a valid ID. Eligibility varies by age, weight, recent travel history, and current medications; anyone unsure whether they qualify can check Vitalant's website or call ahead.
The window is three hours. With more than half of Arizona's blood inventory flowing through drives exactly like this one, each person who walks through the door at 2648 S. Araby Rd. on Wednesday represents real capacity for ECH Yuma's operating rooms and emergency department to keep running without delay.
