José Moreno joins crowded Somerton City Council race for July 21 vote

Somerton voters will pick three at-large council members on July 21, filling seats on a seven-member body that includes the mayor and serves four-year terms. José Moreno is one of seven candidates in the race, and the field was locked in after candidate filings closed March 23.

The contest will decide who joins a council now led by Mayor Gerardo Anaya and Vice Mayor Juan Castillo. Current city records also list Miguel Villalpando, Luis Galindo, Jesus Roldan, Lorena Delgadillo and Martha Gonzalez as council members, making the July ballot a direct test of which names will hold Somerton’s top local offices into the next term.

Somerton’s city code says the elected officers of the city are seven council members, one of whom is elected as mayor. That structure puts the July 21 primary at the center of local decision-making, since the council is the governing body residents turn to on city leadership and the day-to-day direction of municipal government.

Ballotpedia lists seven candidates in the Somerton City Council at-large primary for three seats: Mireya Bran, Juan Castillo, Lorena Delgadillo, Daniel Flores, Brian Lopez, Victor Lozano and José Moreno. The race is nonpartisan, and Somerton’s municipal calendar leaves room for a November 3 general election if any contest is not settled in the primary.

Yuma County Elections includes the City of Somerton among the local jurisdictions on the 2026 ballot, and Arizona Secretary of State records show July 21, 2026, as Primary Election Day. With filings closed and ballot lists taking shape, the race now moves from paperwork to voter choice in South Yuma County.
