Local Shelter Waives Fee, Seeks Home for Active Shepherd Mix
The Humane Society of Yuma featured Blue, a 3 year old German shepherd and husky mix, as its Pet of the Week on December 16 and waived the adoption fee to encourage placement. Blue is described as laid back and enjoys hiking, making him a good match for Yuma County households that spend time outdoors.

The Humane Society of Yuma announced on December 16 that Blue, a 3 year old neutered male German shepherd and husky mix weighing 50 pounds, was featured as the shelter's Pet of the Week and had no adoption fee. The waiver is intended to lower the financial barrier for adoption and get Blue into a permanent home quickly. Blue is easygoing, enjoys walking and hiking, and balances time in a kennel with plenty of cuddle time.
Blue’s temperament and activity preferences will be especially relevant for residents who use Yuma County trails and outdoor spaces. His enjoyment of walking and hiking suggests a good fit for households that can provide daily exercise. The shelter notes that Blue plays well with dogs his own size, but he is not a fan of small dogs in a household. When on leash he will ignore little dogs, which supports compatibility with smaller animals during neighborhood walks and public outings, but prospective adopters with small dogs should weigh that household dynamic carefully.
For the shelter, offering a fee waiver for a healthy, adoptable dog relieves pressure on capacity and operating budgets while increasing the chances of placement. For local families, adopting a dog like Blue can reduce long term pet care expenses compared with purchasing from commercial sources, and it contributes to broader community goals of reducing shelter population and promoting responsible pet ownership.

Those interested in meeting Blue can visit the Humane Society of Yuma at 4050 S. Avenue 4 1/2 E, or call (928) 782 1621. The shelter is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. With adoption fees waived for Blue, the shelter is encouraging timely inquiries and placement before the holiday season transitions into the new year.
