San Luis is lining up pool season, summer camps and Fourth of July programming that will shape daily life for families across the city as temperatures rise. Summer Camp Session 1 begins June 1, the municipal pool opens May 29, Summer Camp Session 2 starts June 29 and the Freedom Celebration is set for July 4.

Angelica Roldan, the city’s parks and recreation director, came to the job with a background in youth programs at Chicanos Por La Causa Migrant Head Start and as the first events coordinator for the City of Somerton. That experience shows up in the way San Luis is using parks, events and cultural spaces not as extras, but as part of the city’s basic public infrastructure.

The Parks and Recreation Department says its mission is to provide opportunities for the physical, social and cultural enhancement of the community through programs and facilities that foster positive values and self-esteem. On the department’s calendar, that mission turns into aerobics classes, modeling classes, hip hop classes for kids, movie nights, sports tournaments, Founders Day programming and Fourth of July celebrations. The city also runs the Cesar Chavez Cultural Center, which it describes as a place for creativity, community vitality and lifelong learning in the arts and culture.

That calendar matters in a city that says it was founded in 1930 and incorporated in 1979. San Luis sits in Yuma County at Arizona’s southwest corner on the border with San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, Mexico, and the city’s economic dashboard lists a 2025 population of 37,337. In that setting, a pool opening or a summer camp session is more than a seasonal amenity. It is one of the main ways children stay active, parents fill the calendar and city life stays visible during the hottest months.

The city’s signature gatherings are part of that same pattern. The Asado & Brew Festival returned April 11, 2026, from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Joe Orduño Park after a weather interruption the year before. The event mixed asado-style cooking, craft beer, live music and family activities, and it had already appeared on the city calendar in 2024 as a Founders Day celebration at Joe Orduño Park from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Nov. 16.

Joe Orduño Park is also where San Luis is investing in the physical side of recreation. The city recently announced an inclusive playground expansion with Campesinos Sin Fronteras Thrive Program, the Cocopah Indian Tribe and Dave Bang Associates, along with stadium-style lighting intended to improve visibility, safety and the user experience during events and activities. For San Luis, the summer lineup is taking shape through programs, parks and upgrades that will be felt in family routines, youth participation and the city’s public life all season long.
