Seven People, Including Two Infants, Critical After Somerton Avenue Crash
Two infants and five others are in critical condition after a two-vehicle crash on Somerton Ave. before 4 p.m. Wednesday, prompting mutual-aid calls to three fire agencies.

Two infants and five other people, including two children and three adults, were fighting for their lives Wednesday after a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Somerton Avenue and County 14th Street sent all seven to the hospital in critical condition.
The crash happened before 4 p.m. and involved two vehicles, with one vehicle rolling over. Crews from the Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department found two vehicles with severe damage and multiple people injured, with a total of seven people, three adults, two children and two infants, being taken to Onvida Health in critical condition.
Due to the number of people injured, SCFD requested help from the San Luis Fire Department, Yuma Fire Department and Rural Metro. The scale of the mutual-aid request, drawing fire and emergency medical resources from across the region, underscored how severe the collision was.
Border Patrol helped in "providing initial first aid" to the victims, while they and the Somerton Police Department assisted with traffic control. The Yuma County Sheriff's Office remained on scene to investigate the crash.

By the time KYMA's reporter arrived at the scene Wednesday evening, the immediate chaos had given way to a quieter but grim picture. No lanes were closed and both vehicles were on the shoulder, with deputies telling the reporter that some people had been taken to the hospital.
All seven were transported to Onvida Health, which holds a Level III Trauma Center designation from the State of Arizona. The hospital is the region's primary acute care facility and Yuma County's only Level III trauma center capable of receiving victims of a crash of this magnitude.
No cause of the collision has been released. The Yuma County Sheriff's Office investigation is ongoing, and no arrests or charges had been announced as of Wednesday evening. The identities and ages of those injured have not been made public.
