Somerton folklórico group performs at Knott’s Berry Farm competition

Grupo de Danza Folclórica Río Colorado took Somerton’s folklórico tradition to the Wagon Camp Stage at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park for a competition promoted for Saturday, June 13, 2026. The appearance put a Yuma County group on a high-traffic stage at one of Southern California’s best-known family destinations.

Knott’s Berry Farm sits about 10 minutes from the Anaheim resort area and says the once-small family farm has grown into a theme park, waterpark and hotel. That scale gave Río Colorado a broad public platform, and the Buena Park venue has already been used for other folklórico and cultural dance showcases in recent years.

The Somerton group has been active at home for years. A Sept. 8, 2023 post placed Grupo de Danza Rio Colorado in Somerton, Arizona, and the group has also shared photos and video from rehearsals and local appearances at Somerton Senior Center, the youth center and a Día del Niño celebration in Somerton.

The group also posted in 2024 that it was preparing new dance numbers, a sign that its repertoire was still expanding as it continued to rehearse and perform locally. Those community-facing appearances show that the Knott’s trip was not a one-off showcase, but the latest step for a group that has kept a visible presence in Somerton while carrying borderland Mexican folk dance into a larger regional setting.

For families in Somerton and across Yuma County, that kind of visibility matters. It gives local dancers a chance to perform before a wider and more diverse audience, builds the group’s profile for future bookings and helps strengthen the sense that Somerton’s cultural identity can travel well beyond Arizona without losing its local roots.
