Two Injured After Single-Vehicle Rollover on I-8 Near Fortuna Road
Rural Metro crews extricated two people after a single-vehicle rollover on westbound I-8 near milepost 13 at the Fortuna Road exit; the incident highlights roadside hazards for Yuma commuters.

Rural Metro crews rescued two people after a single-vehicle rollover early Feb. 1 on westbound Interstate 8 near milepost 13 at the Fortuna Road exit in the Foothills, the agency said. Responders found a severely damaged vehicle with two people trapped inside and extricated both occupants before sending them to Onvida Main with minor injuries.
Rural Metro described an immediate, hands-on response: crews “and got the apparatuses while the station captain ran to the scene and began to assess the situation,” where the captain found “a single vehicle rollover with severe damage and with two people trapped inside.” Rural Metro said the captain requested backup while the crew worked to remove the trapped occupants. After extrication, both were transported to Onvida Main for treatment.
Rural Metro attributed the rollover to a sudden evasive maneuver. The agency said the driver was “swerving to avoid an object falling off a truck on the interstate and striking the road sign, resulting in a piece going through the fence onto the Frontage Road.” That account frames the crash as a chain reaction tied to unsecured or falling cargo on the highway rather than a single-vehicle mechanical failure.
KYMA relayed Rural Metro’s Facebook post and credited photos of the scene to Rural Metro. No official Arizona Department of Public Safety crash report was included with the Rural Metro account in the material reviewed, and state troopers have not been quoted in this initial report. Local authorities typically review serious collisions on I-8; an official investigative finding could clarify whether another vehicle or equipment was involved and whether any citations will be issued.

For Yuma County drivers, the incident underscores a pair of persistent safety issues on the Foothills stretch of I-8: heavy commercial traffic and the risks posed by unsecured loads or debris. The Frontage Road and Fortuna Road exit are frequented by commuters, farm vehicles, and commercial trucks, and sudden hazards on the interstate can force high-speed evasive actions that produce rollovers.
Public health and emergency response officials say prompt first-responder action reduces the chance of more severe outcomes after rollovers. Rural Metro’s rapid extrication likely limited further injury, and the two patients were reported with minor injuries.
Officials are expected to follow up with a formal crash report that could identify the truck involved or confirm other contributing factors. In the meantime, motorists in the area should allow extra space around commercial vehicles, secure loads, and exercise caution on I-8 near the Fortuna Road exit. Local leaders and transportation regulators may also review enforcement and outreach on load securement to help prevent similar crashes on this busy corridor.
