Two vehicles crash on Fortuna Overpass, one taken to hospital

A two-vehicle crash on the southbound Fortuna Overpass sent one person to the hospital Sunday after late-morning impact damage left both vehicles heavily damaged and forced Rural Metro to secure the scene in one of Yuma’s most important traffic corridors.

Rural Metro said crews responded after 11 a.m. and found two vehicles with major damage in the area of the southbound lanes. One person was taken to Onvida Foothills with minor injuries, and no other injuries were reported. Even with a limited medical outcome, the wreck was serious enough to require emergency crews to check occupants for hidden injuries and make the vehicles safe before traffic could fully normalize.

The crash landed in a place where even a short disruption can ripple across daily travel. The Fortuna Overpass carries drivers through a busy part of Yuma and sits along the U.S. 95 corridor, the only road connecting Yuma to Interstate 10 and western Arizona. That makes the crossing more than a local overpass. It is a chokepoint for commuters heading to work, shoppers moving across town and visitors trying to cross the city without detouring far out of the way.

The bridge itself is part of a larger effort to keep that corridor moving. The Fortuna Wash bridge opened in December 2016 after flooding had repeatedly threatened shutdowns on U.S. 95, giving Yuma-area drivers a more reliable route through a section of road that can quickly become a bottleneck when something goes wrong. Arizona’s 511 traffic system also keeps live incident information for Yuma County, underscoring how closely travelers watch problems in this part of the county.

Sunday’s wreck also fit a pattern that Yuma drivers know well. On January 3, 2024, the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office reported a separate two-vehicle collision on the Fortuna Road overpass. Together, the crashes point to a corridor that remains vulnerable to sudden slowdowns and serious collisions, even after infrastructure improvements meant to protect it from flooding and keep traffic moving.
