Kailee Bunte spent National Match Day this March doing what few medical students accomplish: landing her top-choice residency. The Yuma native matched into an Obstetrics and Gynecology position at the University of Colorado Medical School of Medicine, a specialty known for some of the most competitive placement numbers in graduate medical education.

Matching in OB/GYN is highly competitive, and landing a first-choice program reflects years of disciplined preparation. Bunte, a first-generation medical student, brought a perspective to that process that she says set her apart from classmates who followed more conventional paths into medicine.

"Being a first-generation means so much to me. I think that even going through medical school and seeing the different backgrounds from my colleagues that mine is very different, and that holds a lot of value," Bunte expressed.

That difference is rooted in Yuma. Bunte has volunteered locally and serves on the National Board of the Latino Medical School Students Association, a leadership role that places her among medical students working to expand representation in medicine at a national level. The combination of academic achievement and community service has made her, in the words of those who know her work, a pillar in the Yuma community.

Her mother described watching her daughter reach this milestone as almost too much to put into words.

"It's hard to talk about her without crying because I do get overwhelmed. I think every parent wants their child to do better than they do and have a better quality life. I'm just so proud to be able to call her my daughter," she shared.

Bunte is set to begin her residency program in June and has said she is looking forward to giving back to the community that shaped her.
